Mood Swings Big Band was formed in 1995 by a group of musicians who desired only to create a truly unique musical entertainment experience combining not only their talents as musicians but also their fascination for visual musical artistry. The original founding members of Mood Swings first met as members of the Baltimore Colts Marching Band.
“Marching band has always been an exciting form of musical entertainment,” said founding member and saxophonist Ken Stastny. “It allows the artist to paint a visual picture of the music being produced. It provides an extra avenue for the artist to pour their heart and soul into the performance. It’s what I love about Mood Swings. You can see the passion in every performance.”
In fact, Mr. Stastny attributes that marching band foundation as a key to the unique success of Mood Swings.
“Mood Swings all started one day when my high school band director from Calvert Hall College High School in Towson, Maryland called me up one day to see if I could sit in on an upcoming dance band performance for the July 4th Dundalk Heritage Fair. I said ‘sure, I would love to.’ He then asked if I knew anyone else….and of course I did….I knew a whole marching band full of musicians.
“The word quickly got out that I was looking for musicians for an upcoming dance band performance and before you knew it, we had enough interested folks to put an entire band together! I later got another call from my band director, the late Mr. Charles C. Freitag, informing me that the event had been cancelled. When I broke the news to the fellow Colt band members, they were devastated. They were so much looking forward to the performance …So much so that everyone had the same idea, ‘Let’s just do our own performance.’ And so on July 15, 1995 we played our very first performance at my house for my birthday party. I remember it well….I think it was 106 degrees that day….And so it began.”
“We knew at that point that we had to do something special and unique to celebrate our love for this music….And so we did,” said Mood Swings president Dr. Jack Vaeth. “We decided to ‘take our show on the road’ and in one fantastic and utterly memorable day, we performed three separate performances at three separate retirement homes, namely Sunrise Retirement Community in Towson, Maryland, Blakehurst, also in Towson and finally College Manor in Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland. They loved us so much that College Manor eventually invited us to play there regularly and we soon adopted College Manor as our regular rehearsal location.”
As the accolades for that special brand of Mood Swings entertainment grew, so did the number and size of the venues…..and so did the band. From an original classic 16-piece big band, Mood Swings, after twenty years has grown to an organization of twenty-eight including several female and male lead vocalists and a separate three-man sound and stage crew.
“Those were some very special performances for us,” stated Mood Swings chief operating officer, Mr. Mike Sheridan. “I distinctly remember one patron in the back exclaiming over and over again ‘You’re too loud!’….and at that point we weren’t really even playing…we weren’t even using any microphones. We had just grown too big for that tiny room, and the patrons couldn’t even fit into the room with us anymore. But alas, the folks at College Manor invited us to play annually outdoors at their July 4th fireworks concert and we did that for many, many years and for that, we all have great memories.”
The schedule of performances for Mood Swings quickly grew. By the end of the 1990’s Mood Swings was regularly performing over 70 shows a year including a regular “First Fridays” show at The Marriott in Hunt Valley, “First Mondays” at Buddy’s Late Night in Annapolis and “Third Thursdays” at Blob’s Park in Jessup, Maryland. Mood Swings has performed alongside recording artists the likes of Ethil Ennis and performed at the Inauguration Gala for Mayor Martin O’Malley, sharing the stage with The Neville Brothers. Mood Swings also performed the Inauguration Gala for Governor Robert Ehrlich and two Presidential Inauguration Galas for President George W. Bush culminating with an exclusive performance in 2008 at the Annual Congressional Holiday Ball at the White House East Room.

“I very much look forward to working with this talented group of entertainers. What Mood Swings brings to any occasion is well beyond what anyone can ever comprehend from a band. Capturing that unique sense of passion, energy and down-right FUN is going to be my honor. I can’t wait!” exclaimed Mr. Tucker.
The Mood Swings repertoire is expansive including 1940’s big band, 50’s, Motown, classic rock, disco, country and pop.
“We’re continually adding new elements to compliment what we’ve developed over the past 20 years,” explained Dr. Vaeth. We’ve expanded well beyond our roots as a 1940’s style big band. Our goal was to cover the top 100 songs of the century and I think we’ve done well to accomplish that. The diverse talents of each of our performers have allowed us to play all the timeless classics but in a way that makes everyone feel like they’re hearing it for the first time all over again…and just like it’s #1 on the charts.”
